What is an AI mini-task?
An AI mini-task is a small, repeatable unit of work with a known starting point and a result someone can check. Think “classify these support messages and draft a reply,” not “manage customer support.” The narrower promise makes it possible to show the input, preview the output, set a run limit and decide what happens when the model is unsure.
It sits between a fixed automation and an open-ended agent. A fixed rule is best when the same condition always produces the same action. A mini-task is useful when the input has variation—an email, note or document—and a model can help interpret it. An agent that can choose its own next actions is a larger operational commitment; a mini-task should have a small, named set of steps and a clear stop.
Define the boundary before you buy or build
- Input: what one run receives, in what format, and what data must be excluded.
- Output: the fields or draft it returns, plus an example that a person can judge.
- Authority: whether it may prepare a change, or actually send, post or update a record.
- Exception path: what happens for missing information, low confidence, or an unsupported request.
- Run control: who can start or schedule it, how often it can retry, and who can stop it.
Hypothetical example: an operations coordinator receives a daily spreadsheet of vendor questions. A mini-task could group each row by topic and draft a response with a link to the relevant policy. It should return “needs review” when no policy matches. The coordinator still approves replies; the task does not email vendors or invent an answer to fill a blank.
When this shape fits
Use a mini-task when the work repeats, inputs are bounded, and a person can review the result cheaply. Keep a manual process or deterministic rule when volume is low or every case needs judgment. Split a workflow into separate tasks when it crosses teams, data permissions or approval boundaries. One broad prompt is harder to price and audit than two steps with explicit handoffs.
For a buyer, compare the listing’s sample input and output with your own cases before scheduling a run. The listing quality checklist shows what to look for; the task aisles show the available workflow categories. If you want a task scoped around your own inputs, send the market desk one workflow and its success condition.
